Installing Mum Nets

MumNet 1.jpg

 Fitting

The nets should be positioned about 3 inches inside the final volume of the plant, so that the plants grow enough to cover the nets, but not so far down that they don’t support the growth.  We’ve found that this is approximately when the buds are pea-sized.  The Pork & Plants mum nets come in a number of sizes, and which one you use depends on the diameter of mum you grow (sizing information above).

Depending on the size of the mum, one person can put the nets on, but for larger pots, it works best for 2 people to work from opposite sides.  In a matter of 15 seconds or less, you can secure the net.

FITTING INSTRUCTIONS

  • Select the right time to fit your mumnet.  As a general rule, The Net should be positioned  about 3 inches (7.5 centimeters) inside the final volume of the plant: so you decide when is a good time to fit it.

  • Choose the proper size
    (see above for instructions)

  •  Position the net  by simply placing it on the plant and  sure that the entire plant is well covered.   If the bottom of the net protrudes too far for the plant growth, fold the excess under the plant.

Choosing A Size

To choose the right net size, measure the overall diameter of the chrysanthemum as you are about to fit the net (when buds are pea-sized), and multiply the diameter  by 1.5.

Example :

If the chrysanthemum measures 40 cm (16 in. as you are about to fit the net),

multiply 40 cms by 1.5 = 60 cm and choose the nearest net size, i.e 55 x 55 cm.

If the chrysanthemum measures 45 cm (18 in. as you are about to fit the net),

multiply 45 cm x 1.5 = 67.5 cm, and choose the nearest net size, i.e 65 x 65 cm, and so on.

Generally speaking, if in doubt, choose a larger size.

We grow our mums big, with lots of spacing, so that they grow down around the sides of the pot.  The size net will depend on the variety and how much you space them, but to give you a rough idea of sizes based on pot sizes, here is what we typically use: 6″ – 35-45cm net, 8″ pot (single plant) – 55cm net, 10″ pot (2 plants) – 65cm, 12″ pot (3 plants) – 75-95cm, 12″ hanging garden (plants in side & top of basket) – 105cm.
